WBB Recruiting: Badgers nab 2023 PG D'Yanis Jimenez out of Florida
She is the third commit in UW's 2023 class so far.
Much like how a quarterback should be taken in every recruiting class for college football teams, I’d argue that a basketball team should take a point guard in every class. In the age of the ::cue ominous music:: transfer portal, having a floor general that can command your team is paramount to success. Keep bringing one in until you find the right fit imo.
Marisa Moseley’s 2023 class now has their point guard. D’Yanis Jimenez (Punta Gorda, Fla.) out of Charlotte High School and the Miami Suns (Nike EYBL circuit) announced her commitment to the Badgers on Thursday via her Instagram account. She had other offers from Columbia, Jacksonville University, Penn and Southern Miss among others.
Jimenez, who stands around 5-foot-8, finished her junior season averaging 15.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 3.1 steals per game while being named First Team All-Area, along with one of her teammates. She was also named the SunPreps Girls Player of the Year while leading the Tarpons to back-to-back regional titles.
There are precious few highlights of Jimenez online, but the below tweet perfectly describes her game from the clips I did see. When she gets a rebound, or the ball is cleared to her, she is looking to get it up the court with a quickness.
Jimenez is fast, without playing out of control, and can weave through defenders to get to the tin for layups. I didn’t see many highlights of her shooting ability, but heading into her senior season she has already scored over 1,000 points and the below tweets are certainly promising.
I especially like the floater in the second clip because finishing through Big Ten bigs is tough and having a floater/mid-range package that defenders have to respect will make her all the more difficult to guard.
What will endear here to Wisconsin fans first, however, is her defense. She looks to have top-tier instincts on that end and when she gets a steal, she is looking to take it the distance for two points. Jimenez has active hands, is constantly looking for the ball, and will out-hustle her opponent to get to it first.
I’m going to try and get in touch with Jimenez to ask her about her commitment to Wisconsin and see what drew her to the Badgers all the way from Florida.
She joins wing Tessa Grady (Dublin, Ohio) and CG Leena Patibandla (Massillon, Ohio), both of whom I discussed in these linked pieces at Bucky’s 5th Quarter, in the 2023 class for the Badgers.
Thank you for this write up on my lovely daughter! We are so happy to join the Badgers and she will be ready to contribute. Can’t wait for you to see this Florida player bring sunshine to Wisconsin!!
