WBB: who else applied for the open assistant coach positions this offseason?
There were actually a ton of people who wanted to coach in Madison next season!
This is my first offseason covering the women’s basketball assistant coaching carousel so I don’t have a large (read: any) frame of reference for what is and isn’t normal. However, here are some things I learned via my FOIA request to UW on who applied for the open UW women’s hoops assistant coach position!
66 different people applied
the most common previous job for applicants was, you guessed it, assistant coach
coaches from colleges, high schools, and AAU teams applied
a former scout for the Seattle Storm applied
Eric, Matt, and Sarah were the most common first names (each appearing twice) for applicants. There was one Sara and one Matthew as well, if you want to really dive into the data.
Shortest name appearing was 8 letters (Evan Drew and Uyen Tran)
Longest name appearing was 16 letters (Benjamin Edelburg)
Did you know that there is a school in Georgia called Life University? Well, you do now!
Staffers from multiple Big Ten schools and multiple UW System schools applied.
Both Margaret McKeon and Tiffany Morton, who each ended up getting hired, applied for the first open assistant position.
Here are some of the more interesting applicants that I discovered. Please keep in mind that I find some strange stuff interesting so your mileage may vary in that regard.
